Decimation vs. Retopology vs. Compression

Three different ways people describe “making a model lighter.” They solve different problems.

Decimation

What it is: An algorithm removes triangles that contribute least to the shape. UVs and vertex colors may survive, while edge flow becomes less regular.

Use it when: You need to meet a triangle budget and the mesh will not be rigged or sculpted afterwards.

Triangle count: Drops toward a target · File size: Often drops too

Retopology

What it is: A new surface is rebuilt over the old one, often using even quads that follow its form.

Use it when: The mesh needs clean edge flow for rigging, deformation, sculpting or subdivision.

Triangle count: Rebuilt · File size: Depends on the result

Compression

What it is: Data is encoded more efficiently without necessarily changing the number of triangles.

Use it when: File transfer or an upload limit is the problem, rather than the mesh's rendering cost.

Triangle count: Usually unchanged · File size: May drop

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the reducer and its settings. Preserving UVs helps keep existing texture coordinates, but aggressive reduction may stretch details. Inspect the result, particularly around seams.

Decimation removes triangles from an existing surface. Remeshing rebuilds the surface and can produce a different topology. Choose based on whether you need fewer triangles or cleaner geometry.

GLB, GLTF, FBX, OBJ and STL are common 3D formats. Supported imports and exports depend on the particular software you choose.

There is no universal percentage. Begin conservatively, view the model at its intended size and check the silhouette, small features, shading and textures as you lower the count.

No. This page explains polygon reduction and links to a separate 3D studio. It does not upload, process or export your model.

Often, but not always by much. Textures and embedded data can dominate file size. Compression addresses stored data; decimation addresses mesh complexity.
